Reading Tips

Reading from beginning to end

To read continuously through the entire text, click on the right arrow
Next to next Web page
at the end of the text on each Web page or the one following the accompanying notes. (To return to the preceding section, use the "Previous" link.)

"A Directory of Families" page

This Web page provides an alphabetized table of contents by family for those looking for information about particular families and the individuals within them mentioned in this narrative. Alternative spellings of family names are included.

Footnotes

Footnote numbering begins with 1 on each Web page.
If you prefer, you can read straight through a page's narrative text and then read the notes, using the "return to text" links when necessary to remind yourself of a note's context.
Alternatively, you can click on a linked footnote number to access the notes. Not every number will be a link. Paragraphs with more than one footnote,3 have a single link to the Notes section. For example, a paragraph like this one containing footnotes 3, 4, and 5 will have a link on the superscript five that takes you directly to note three.4 Notes 4 and 5 follow in turn. At the end of note 5 is a "return to the text" link back to the narrative. (See how this works by clicking on the linked 5 at the end of this sentence.)5

Women's family names

A woman's family name, when known, is shown in {braces}: e.g. Irene Louise {Habicht} Neal.

Abbreviations

Certain abbreviations are explained the first time they are used. If you are reading only a section or two, you may find this short list helpful:
  • IGI – International Genealogical Index
  • IHS – Indiana Historical Society
  • LDS – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • USGS – United States Geological Survey

Supporting information

This history was written for my own family, which explains its references to my files, photographic slides, maps, and similar supporting documentation.

Revisions

This is a living document, which I revise as I discover more information. The date of the last revision of each section is shown on the table of contents page and immediately following the text of a section (just before the footnotes begin).
